GVK & Elizabeth Murphy talk about dreams

Elizabeth Murphy calls herself the “organization whisperer” and I call her a facilitator of dreams. She has helped numerous organizations from health to the arts by bringing their dreams into a reality. And that got us talking about dreams ~ what they mean to us and the messages we have received. Elizabeth and I have all experienced premonitory dreams ~ dreams that give you a slice of the future. Elizabeth had a dream that was a slice of a day from September 11th, the day the Twin Towers fell in New York City. She had this dream for years, until the actual day when it manifested. My premonitory dreams feel Super alive. The colors are more vivid, the sounds more crisp and I feel ultra alert in them. Elizabeth and I have come to listen to our dreams and look to them to guide us through our waking lives. Or as Elizabeth says ‘live in the world behind our eyes’. Elizabeth talks about how the teachings of Caroline Myss the medical intuitive, changed her perspective and helped her embrace what is unseen in our lives. Carolyn asks do we want to have an “au de toilet, cologne or a perfume” life.  And we all agreed that the perfume life is something we all desire and that life will look different for everyone.

Elizabeth had always wanted to write poetry and had the great fortune to meet and talk with poet Seamus Heaney and be inspired by him. We talked about the book One Wild Life by Clare Mulvany and taking the leap into your desired life.

GVK with Eric Ruhalter author of Phrazzlers

Laughter was the medicine of the day when I talked with Eric Ruhalter, the author of the book Phrazzlers. This is a book of words that Eric made up to describe the crazy things kids do, from the parent perspective, like~ “peehearsal” ~ one of the frequent accidents that occur before potty training is successfully completed.

We laughed a great deal during this conversation! Mine and Eric’s children are in the teen years. But, oh, the book brought us back!! And while it made us laugh, we also talked about the loneliness of parenting. Eric’s discovery that the book made parents feel less alone was awesome. It was a gift that he was not expecting.

Sticks and stones can break my bones, but, words will never hurt me ~ I believe that adage is grossly incorrect. In my teen years, I was deeply hurt by words thrown at me and about me. Words carry energy and that energy spirals around and since energy does not die, what happens to the negative things we say in haste or judgement or pain? I think it swirls around out there until it is transmuted and shifted. Eric’s book is a great way to transmute some of that negativity and add joy to the world. It is a way to tip the balance in favor of positive energy. Those early years of parenting were very lonely and very stressful. Everything is always happening for the first time, because each child is different! I feel that we have lost something valuable with how our society parents today. We tuck the primary care giver away (in my case, most of us were women) in their homes, with “playdates” here and there to break up the monotony and confusion of parenting. Here I was a hard core career woman, avidly pursuing my acting career when I had my first child. All the books and seminars could never have possibly prepared me for how my life changed when Landon was born! It was so much of a world spinner that I wrote a solo show about it called

Baby, Oh Baby

that explored the surprises of new parenthood! More on that another day. Until then, check out Eric’s youtube promo video for the book called~

GVK & Julie Genovese – shifting perspectives

I am so happy to have Julie Genovese, author of Nothing Short of Joy back on GVK!

Julie has a great phrase called ~ going to the “Spiritual Pub”. Meaning that we go to a place in the spirit realm to pick different things that would be interesting or growth experiences for the soul. For her it was dwarfism. She thought that would be a great adventure as she was looking at her choices up at the “pub”. Yet, when she got here, she forgot that she thought it would be great and got mired up in “being different” and then explored the feelings of that for a time. Of course, then comes the shift in perspective! Looking at a situation from our Higher Self experience can shed light on our choices and bring more peace.

I love the spiritual teachings of Pemma Chodron which help us see life in a different light and therefore give up the illusion of separate~ness. I feel that we have contracts with people to help us along our path to enlightenment here. Those people seem like the least likely to be our “helpers”, but, their interactions in our lives bring about the most profound awakenings. There have been so many times that I have wondered “why would I pick this!” so, believe me, it is not always easy to see the Higher view on these things!! Meditation and prayer help me tremendously. And I am blessed to have friends and a fabulous husband who help me stay balanced. They give me a safe place to bounce ideas and feeling off of. And it is always wonderful to meet someone like Julie and fold her into my circle…

GVK & Louisa Oakley Green, author of Loitering at the Gate to Eternity

For Louisa Oakley Green, author of Loitering at the Gate to Eternity, the process of coming to believe that there is more to life than meets the eye was a slooooooow process. Married to a psychic who comes from a long line of seers, she ultimately witnessed so many psychic happenings that she could no longer deny life beyond the physical self. In her book, she interviews  psychics from all walks of life. This not only validates what she Knows to be Truth, but, it opens up the door for the skeptical, the non believer, and the even the secret psychic who walk among us. She may feel that she is the bystander of the family, but, I believe that writers tap into the spiritual realm and become a channel for what comes forth and therefore is not as much of a bystander as she thinks she is!!

For me, as soon as I read Out on a Limb by Shirley MacLaine my life changed. My soul sister Jillian and I would talk for hours about Ms. MacLaine’s experiences. The book awakened my dormant psychic and I will be forever grateful. I began to understand the feelings, hunches, dreams and visions that I had always carried with me. I began to study about the psychic experience and open my soul to my latent gift. I stopped thinking that I was weird! And I also stopped being afraid. I had psychic experiences as a child but because I did not understand them, I became afraid and shut most of it down. But, seriously, it seeped into everything I did anyway! During this time of psychic awakening, I had a dream that my boyfriend at the time was going to cheat on me. He called me to say that he was going to the library for the day and I said “no you’re not. you are going to meet Marisa at the train and go to lunch with her.”  He was stunned! He felt pretty uneasy after that and eventually we went our separate ways. Which was great because, Jeff, my husband and the love of my life, was only a few years away from me at that time. In fact a psychic told me about Jeff! He said that my soul-mate was was younger than me, worked in the business world and that that he was going to love me for me. Even though I thought he was wrong about the business part (I always thought I’d marry someone in the arts ~haha!), I knew he was right about the soul mate, because I could feel him close by energetically. Sure enough, Jeff is younger than me and in the business world.

GVK & Kate Braemer – kids in need

Kate Braemer is the camp director at the Garrett Williamson Foundation for the under-served children in the Philadelphia area. She and I talked about working with these children by expanding their world experiences. For some of these children their only meal of the day will be at camp. Because of this, Kate has been making big changes in the menu and teaching the children about health and nutrition. She switched from white bread to whole wheat. She has the kitchen making soup and tomato sauces from scratch. She and the campers not only care for the onsite garden, but they eat from it too! Kate is instituting these changes, which will echo into the children’s communities. This raises awareness about health and lower potential instances of obesity. The children are part of a community service program which helps them connect with their environment in a positive way. They participate by picking up garbage they find on the Earth.

Supporting our children is the most important way to institute positive change in our world. And by our, I mean all children. They are the new world leaders and I believe they hold the answers to the issues that trouble us today. Before talking with Kate I was reminiscing about when my son was young and how easy it was for him to march to his own drummer. My experiences with my children showed me that by supporting them with acceptance and love was only the tip of the iceberg. Good nutrition, Earth consciousness, and social awareness play a big role in allowing them to become the leaders they were born to be. When we instituted a recycling program at our elementary school, the children not only picked up the rhythm instantly, but then were instrumental in keeping the teachers up with the program! This year, in parts of the northeast, we experienced the 17 year cicada. The teachers read stories about the cicada and talked at length to the children about their incredible journey. On the playground, there were hundreds of cicadas flying and crawling. Children in grades K-5 would carry these cicadas all over their arms and shoulders, bringing them to the safety of trees. The care and gentleness was inspiring. The children understood the delicate rare cycle of these creatures and honored them. If they can understand and love something so different from themselves, then loving another human who is a different color or religion is an absolute reality. And that is going to be our answer. Co~existence with those we share the Earth with, including our own species.

The Garrett Williamson Foundation takes donations of every sort for these children in need. Do you have toys that your children have outgrown? Clothing? Furniture? Please reach out to them ~
